Computer science is one of the most sought-after fields in university admissions, and algorithmic programming competitions have become a common way for students to build and demonstrate their skills. USACO, the USA Computing Olympiad, is one such competition: it is open to students around the world for online practice and contests, it selects the top four students in the USA for the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), and MIT Admissions’ blog lists it as the US qualifying competition for the IOI. 1. USACO’s Four Divisions and Our Coaching Outcomes

USACO is organized into four divisions, and every new competitor begins in Bronze. Students move up by scoring above a per-contest promotion cutoff, which advances them to the next division for future contests. The divisions build on one another:

  • Bronze — entry level: basic programming, simple logic, and straightforward algorithms such as simulation, sorting, and brute force.
  • Silver — common algorithms: greedy methods, binary search, prefix sums, and graph traversal (DFS).
  • Gold — dynamic programming, graph theory and shortest paths, and efficient data structures such as union-find.
  • Platinum — advanced modeling and algorithm design, with no fixed syllabus and no upper bound on difficulty; segment trees and advanced dynamic programming are typical.

Over the years, students we have coached have advanced through these divisions, including to Gold and Platinum. Our focus is steady, division-by-division progress rather than any single result.

2. Curriculum: A Structured Path from Basics to Advanced

USACO does not publish a single official textbook or fixed syllabus, although it does provide hundreds of hours of free online training resources and past contest problems with solutions. To give students a clear structure on top of those resources, Hanlin has developed its own teaching system, which includes:
