The USACO (USA Computing Olympiad) is a free algorithmic programming competition for high-school students. It runs a series of online contests across four skill divisions and selects the four students who represent the United States at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI). MIT Admissions’ blog lists USACO as the US qualifying competition for the IOI. For students interested in computer science, it is a structured way to build and demonstrate real algorithmic skill.

USACO Competition Schedule (2025–2026 Season)

The 2025–2026 season runs three online contests followed by the US Open championship. Each contest opens a multi-day window, and you take the contest in one continuous session inside that window.

  • First Contest: January 9–12, 2026
  • Second Contest: January 30–February 2, 2026
  • Third Contest: February 20–23, 2026
  • US Open: March 28, 2026 (proctored, held in person at designated sites)

Competition Overview

Who can take part: Anyone worldwide can enter the online contests and use the training resources with a free account. Only pre-college students in the USA are eligible for finalist and training-camp selection and for the USA IOI and EGOI teams.

Format: An individual contest with problems given in English. Each contest lasts 4–5 continuous hours and typically contains 3 problems (occasionally 4). There is never any fee to take part.

Scoring: Each problem is worth about 333.33 points, for a maximum of 1000. Every problem is graded automatically against roughly 10 test cases, and you receive per-test-case feedback as you submit.

Programming languages: C, C++, Java, and Python are supported. C++ is recommended for the higher divisions, and it is the only language used at the IOI.

The Four Divisions (Bronze to Platinum)

Every new participant starts in Bronze and moves up by clearing the promotion cutoff in a contest.

  • Bronze: The entry level. Focuses on basic programming, simple logic, simulation, sorting, and brute-force approaches. The right starting point for students with no prior contest experience.
  • Silver: Introduces common algorithms such as greedy methods, binary search, prefix sums, and graph traversal (DFS).
  • Gold: Covers dynamic programming, graph theory and shortest paths, and efficient data structures such as union-find.
  • Platinum: The top division. Emphasizes advanced modeling and algorithmic creativity, with no fixed syllabus and no upper limit on difficulty; segment trees and advanced dynamic programming are typical.

How Promotion Works

A perfect score of 1000 earns immediate promotion during the contest, and you may move on to the next division’s problems within the same window. Otherwise, you are promoted when you score above that contest’s promotion cutoff, which varies from contest to contest.

Two rules are worth noting for the 2025–2026 season. Gold and Platinum contestants who want a certified score (used for advancement and camp qualification) must start on Saturday at 12:00 PM Eastern Time, when the problems are released; the Chinese site describes this as a 15-minute start window from 12:00 to 12:15 PM ET. In addition, Platinum competitors were reset to Gold at the start of the season, a practice USACO has said it may continue.

A Sample Preparation Timeline

Foundation building (summer): Learn the basics of Python or C++ from scratch, work through past Bronze problems, and get comfortable reading problem statements in English.

Algorithm advancement (early fall): If you are aiming for Silver, focus on searching, binary search, and greedy methods; if you are aiming for Gold, add dynamic programming and basic graph theory. Solve problems regularly to build intuition.

Past-paper practice (late fall): Work through recent years’ problems division by division. Keep a log of your mistakes and systematically shore up weak topics.

Mock contests (before the first contest): Simulate a full contest under realistic 4–5 hour conditions and practice debugging quickly, so you are ready for the first contest in January.

Goals by Grade Level

Grades 6–8: Get comfortable with programming syntax and aim to reach Silver within the season to build a solid foundation.

Grades 9–10: Study algorithms systematically and work on moving from Silver to Gold.

Grades 11–12: Aim for Gold or Platinum; results can be included among your college application activities, including Early Decision and Early Action submissions.
