USACO Advancement Rules

Every new participant starts in the Bronze division. There are two ways to move up.

If you earn a perfect score during a contest, you are promoted immediately and may start the next division’s problems within the same contest window, with a fresh timer.

Otherwise, promotion is decided after the official results are released. The maximum score is 1000 points, usually spread across three problems. Promotion cutoffs are set for each contest rather than fixed in advance; in recent seasons the monthly cutoffs have mostly fallen between 650 and 750 points.

What Changed for the 2025–26 Season

USACO made several adjustments for the 2025–26 season, which the organizers described as a transitional year:

  • The US Open is now proctored and held in person at designated sites rather than online.
  • Gold and Platinum contestants who want a certified score must start on Saturday at 12:00 ET, when the problems are released, within a start window of about 15 minutes.
  • Platinum competitors were reset to the Gold division at the start of the season, a change the organizers said they may keep in future years.
  • Training-camp selection was based on the proctored US Open, to which the top competitors from the online contests were invited.

If you prefer Python or Java, pay close attention to time limits. The judge allows 2 seconds per test case for C and C++ and 4 seconds for Java and Python, so optimize accordingly.
